The flying squirrel is a medium-sized rodent, closely related to the squirrels found in woodlands and across grasslands around the world. Flying squirrels tend to be slightly larger in size than the common squirrel.
Despite the name, flying squirrels cannot actually fly, although they can be airborne for a remarkable length of time. Instead of flying, flying squirrels move through the air by gliding (normally between the trees), with the longest recorded glide of a flying squirrel being nearly 90 meters.

Flying squirrels have a furry, stretchy membrane that stretches between their front and back legs. When the flying squirrel needs to get away quickly, it opens it's arms and legs out and uses the membrane like a parachute. Flying squirrels also have large eyes, and stubby flattened tails.

There are nearly 50 different species of flying squirrel found in forests around the world. Flying squirrels range in size and colour depending on the species of flying squirrel. The largest species of flying squirrel is the Woolly flying squirrel, which is found in Pakistan and the smallest flying squirrel species is the pygmy flying squirrel, found in the jungles of Borneo and Malaysia.

Flying squirrels are omnivorous animals meaning that their diet is based on both plant and animal matter. The flying squirrel is a nocturnal animal, so it forages for food under the cover of night as flying squirrels are not able to easily escape the birds of prey that hunt during the day. Flying squirrels eat nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, insects and bird eggs.

Due to their small size, flying squirrels have numerous natural predators wherever they live in the world. Domestic cats, raccoons, snakes, birds of prey, foxes dogs and coyotes are all primary predators of the flying squirrel.

Flying squirrels are known to breed twice a year, in the early spring and again in the summer. After a gestation period of roughly 40 days, the female flying squirrel gives birth to between 2 and 7 baby flying squirrels, which are blind and naked when they are born. The baby flying squirrels develop fur and open their eyes when they are about a month old. The young flying squirrels begin to glide and forage with their mother when they are roughly 2 months old.

In Carrollton as like most states in our great nation Raccoons are abundant. Raccoons have learned that the attics Chimneys and soffits of our homes can be a safe place to have babies and live. Exclusion of the raccoons in the attic is Paramount to conclusion of issue.Whether is bats squirrels raccoons or rodents in your attic The Wildlife Professionals of Carrollton can trap and remove them from your property.

An raccoon in the attic will use your attic insulation as a latrine and one of the first sign that an raccoon is living in the attic is areas where there is raccoon feces or poop gathered. A raccoon removal expert can remove the animal feces and contaminated material as well as trap the animal from the attic.

Size and Weight: The adult raccoon is a medium-sized mammal and the largest of the Procyonidae family.  It averages 24 to 38 inches in length and can weigh between 14 to 23 lbs., or more, depending upon habitat and available food. The male raccoon, or boar, is slightly larger than the female, also referred to as sow. The young are called kits.

Physical Features: The mask of black fur that covers its eyes is its most characteristic and familiar feature. One hypothesis for the dark fur is that it may help reduce glare and enhance the nocturnal animal’s night vision. The species has grayish brown fur, almost 90% of which is dense underfur to insulate the animal against the cold. Five to eight light and dark rings alternate on its tail. Because its hind legs are longer than the front legs, a raccoon often appears hunched when they walk or run. The five toes on a raccoon’s front paws are extremely dexterous, functioning essentially as five little fingers which allow it to grasp and manipulate food it finds in the wild as well as a variety of other objects, including doorknobs, jars, and latches. A raccoon’s most heightened sense is its sense of touch. It has very sensitive front paws and this sensitivity increases underwater. When able, a raccoon will examine objects in water.

Life span: In the wild, a raccoon has a life expectancy of about 2 to 3 years, but in captivity a raccoon can live up to 20 years.

Diet: The raccoon is an omnivorous and opportunistic eater, with its diet determined heavily by its environment. Common foods include fruits, plants, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, eggs, and crayfish. In urban environments, the animal often sifts through garbage for food. The majority of its diet consists of invertebrates and plant foods.

Geography: The raccoon is native to North America and can be found throughout the United States, except for parts of the Rocky Mountains, and southwestern states like Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. It can also be found in parts of Canada, Mexico and the northern-most regions of South America. During the 20th century, the species was introduced to other parts of the globe, and now has an extensive presence in countries like Germany, Russia, and Japan.

Habitat: Originally raccoons lived in the tropics where they could be found foraging along riverbanks. Over time they moved north up the continent, successfully adapting to new territories and expanding their diet. Traditionally, they live in tree cavities or burrows emerging at dusk to hunt frogs and crustaceans while keeping an eye out for predators such as coyotes and foxes. Barns have aided their northern migration, offering refuge from cold northern winters, and now, raccoons have been found as far north as Alaska. The species originally kept to the deciduous and mixed forests of North America, but its impressive ability to adapt has enabled the animal to move into a wide range of habitats, from mountainous terrains to large cities. The first urban sighting was in Cincinnati during the 1920s. Raccoon populations do very well in urban areas, primarily due to hunting and trapping restrictions, a general lack of predators, and an abundance of available human food. The size of a raccoon’s home range varies depending on habitat and food supply. In urban areas, its home range generally spans about one mile.

Breeding and Social Structure: The animal is nocturnal, mostly foraging and feeding at night. Though previously thought to be quite solitary, there is now evidence that the species congregates in gender-specific groups. Mating season for raccoons falls generally anytime between January and June.  Most females begin reproducing around the age of one. The female has a 65-day gestation period and gives birth to two to five kits, usually in the spring. A mother usually separates from other raccoons to raise her young alone. The male does not participate in the raising of the kits. The black mask is already visible on newly-born kits. The kits stay in the den with their mother until they are between 8-10 weeks old, and will stay with their mother until they reach 13-14 months of age.

Question: I found a bat in my house, what do I do?

Answer: Call a wildlife removal company that specializes in bat removal. If at all possible try to keep your eye on the bat. Some people are very scared of bats, For these people I would say close all doors so as to minimize were the bat can get to. This will make it easier for the bat pro to find the bat.

Question: Why are bats living in my attic?

Answer: As our civilization grows new construction is surely to follow. The building of new homes and neighborhoods slowly diminish the natural habitat  of bats and eventually the bat colony will adapt or evolve. Once the bat colony realizes that the bat colony can survive in an attic, space or even chimney, the bat colony will take advantage of any small opening or gap to enter the structure.

Attics tend to be a hot spot when dealing with bat removal. Attic spaces make an ideal area. Attic spaces make for great protection against the elements and potential predators. Bats in your attic are simply trying to adapt or evolve to protect it’s species.

Question: Where did these bats come from?

Answer: Since most bats eat insects, evolutionists have traditionally taught that bats evolved from primitive insectivores, as did shrews, moles, etc.  Fruit-eaters merely modified their diet due to ecological pressures.

Then in the early '80s J. D. Smith (Smith pp. 347-365) suggested that megabats and microbats evolved separately, because there are many physiological differences between the two other than just size.  Microbats have a complicated shoulder joint and a claw only on the thumb, for example, while megabats have a simple shoulder joint but a claw on both the thumb and first finger.  Micros use echo-location, while macros mainly rely on their keen eyesight.  Micro teeth are designed for prey, while mega teeth grind plant parts.  Megabats can live only in the tropics, needing a year-round food supply; many microbats have the ability to hibernate through cold winters.

Question: How do I get rid of bats?

Answer: The best way to rid yourself of a unwanted bat colony in your house is to hire a professional that is trained in true bat removal and bat control techniques to ensure a safe and humane bat proofing process.

A bat exclusion is the only sure fire way to get rid of bats. A One Way Bat Door is the equipment most bat control experts use. It is extremely effective if installed correctly.

Question: Who do I look for to get rid of theses bats in my attic?

Answer : We highly recommend The Wildlife Professionals for all of your wildlife removal and animal control issues.

Question: When do bats have babies? And why can’t I have bats removed?
Depending on the severity of the season, the species and the region a professional bat control operator can advise the best time for bat removal and bat exclusion.

Most bats are federally protected and it is illegal to exclude bats or close bats out when there is a great possibility that the young bats could be affected or even killed by the process. Bats are extremely important to our ecosystem. Never try to kill a bat colony!

Question: What kind of bats is living in my attic?

Answer: The are several types of bats found living in building, office buildings, church, and homes across America. The common two bats most usually found dwelling in building structures are the “Big Brown Bat” and “Small  Brown Bat”  and they are also protected species.

Question: Is it illegal to poison and kill bats?

Answer: YES

Question: Can I just put a light in the attic and draw the bats out?

Answer: I have not been in an attic that had a strobe light and not found bats still living there. Although I have heard some success stories I have not witnessed it myself.

Question: Will mothballs really drive out the bats?

Answer: I have had measured success with mothballs or naphthalene will sometimes drive a bat colony out for a day or so. But eventually they will come bat. I have been in an attic space that had mothballs in pantyhose hanging from the rafters and witnessed bats hanging from the pantyhose. So I am assuming they simply got used to the smell!

Question: What do I do about the bat guano in the attic after the bats are gone?

Answer: Only use a qualified bat control when dealing with waste guano. Guano can accumulate over time and can have ecoli, bat bugs, and even hystoplasmosis.  The guano could be extremely dangerous to those who have asthma, or other breathing issues such as the elderly and the extreme young.

Question : What is attic restoration?

Attic restoration is the process of cleaning out the waste bat guano from the attic space, disinfecting the whole area and putting new insulation down. Attic restoration restores the attic space and in most instances increases the R value( Insulation Value) in your attic space.
